The Month of Elul
Elul precedes Rosh Hashanah and is traditionally reserved for introspection, repentance, and personal growth. Each day of Elul, we are asked to examine our deeds and seek reconciliation with others. During Elul, many take on spiritual practices such as reading special Psalms, writing letters of forgiveness, or joining study groups. This period provides an opportunity to assess the past year’s challenges and triumphs, taking the first steps toward meaningful change.
By the time Rosh Hashanah arrives, individuals and communities alike are better prepared to enter the High Holidays with open hearts and clear intentions. Elul reminds us that personal transformation is an ongoing journey, enriched by reflection, humility, and hope.
After the service, congregants and guests often linger for an Oneg Shabbat, enjoying light refreshments and conversation. This fellowship deepens our connections, allowing us to share the joys and challenges of the week.

Selichot marks the official start of the High Holiday season, typically observed on the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah. At CBSRZ, our tradition features a film chosen by the Rabbi that touches on the themes of Selichot, discussion, a short prayer service and changing of the Torah mantles. The evening strives to inspire self-examination, reminding us to acknowledge our missteps and commit to healthier relationships and behavior.
